Huh? Flying Spoons?

The origin of Slaprea

[slapRea]

The Khmer word "Slaprea" (written as ស្លាបព្រា) directly translates to the word "spoon". And with a pun-intended, the Khmer
word "slap" (ស្លាប) means "wings" thus our Flying Spoon! The whole notion of Slaprea is a tasting event where your tastebuds and senses go flying!

we were cambodia’s biggest food festival…

Slaprea was Cambodia’s biggest food festival with hundreds of food & drink offers, served with live music, games and contests.

We sought for flavors, experiences and stories to share to the 150,000 food lovers that would come to our 3 day festivals.

But then as we started on our sustainability learning journeys, we realised that being the biggest wasn’t serving us, our fans nor the planet. It wasn’t a mission that served us anymore.

But we still really, really love food.

And we love people.

And we certainly love the planet.

Historically, Slaprea started as a social experiment for waste management in 2017 and we delivered pro bono reports to the Ministries of Environment, Tourism and Education, UNDP and City Council for information sharing and policy.

We then started conducting research in AMR (Antimicrobial Resistance), Empathy in Society and Consumer Food & Beverage Insights for market dissemination.

There were great activities that we ran, but we needed a greater strategic vision.

Who cares if we’re Cambodia’s biggest? Do you?

We thought more deeply about what you really care about, and what’s really important.

So starting in 2024, we’ve decided to focus on three areas that our fans and community really care about:

1) Taste! The spirit of Slaprea is about the experience of what life has to offer in food and drink that send your tastebuds ‘flying’. This means we work with chefs and food growers to serve up tastes and food experiences that’ll have your mouth watering!

2) Entertainment - What do you do after you eat? Kick a velcro ball onto a giant target! Dance to our live bands, learn to cook, jump on the bouncy castle, watch a play or try a fruit carving class! Life is lived through experiences, we promise to bring new

3) Sustainability - It’s irresponsible for businesses anywhere in the world to make profit without trying to reduce their negative impacts. In Cambodia and New Zealand where we operate, infrastructure and technology doesn’t yet exist to have a zero-emission and waste-free festival. Yet. So we’ve started our 2027 Regenerative Business Journey to make sure our festivals not only reduce our negative impacts, but improve the communities and environment where we are.

Follow our social media to catch our latest 2024 sustainability plans and journey to improve social, environmental and economic outcomes in Cambodia and beyond whilst delivering exceptional food and entertainment experiences.

Our journey of

What do we mean by “A Food festival for good”?

That by 2027:

We provide cleaner energy than was there before

  • At our venues such as the National Olympic Stadium and at our events

  • Through technology, partnerships and capacity building (more below)

We have empowered our community to be more sustainable whilst improving the local economy

  • Through training, networking, group-buy and trade assistance

We have strengthened community relationships and diversity whilst empowering local culture

  • Through food, connection and entertainment

  • Through campaigning, research and stories

We have little to no waste at our events

  • And have helped our stakeholders improve their waste journeys with education and infrastructure we help put in place

We generate little to no emissions, and have helped our fans and vendors reduce their emissions

  • Through partnerships with solution providers and helping them scale their technologies and users
